Parley P. Pratt was one of the Church's Apostles and played several important roles in the history of Park City.
In 1872, the town was named Parley's Park City due to the expansive, high mountain Park which stretched off from to the north from town, where Parley grazed his cattle. The entire name became too cumbersome to use, thus shortened to Park City.
Since the Mormons could not participate in mining for precious metals, Apostles such as Parley shared in the bonanza in other ways. He built a toll road from Park City to Salt Lake City and made a profit from prospectors leaving Utah for California to sake their claims at Sutter's Mill.
